The Department of Government Efficiency, commonly referred to as DOGE, has been all over the news for months. This commission, headed by Elon Musk, has been tasked with finding wasteful government spending and giving recommendations on how to resolve it.
Further, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is also under pressure right now. HHS oversees the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the organizations that administer the health insurance policies that most seniors rely upon. Recently, it was announced that there would be major funding cuts from this government agency.
In March, the federal government announced significant cuts to HHS. While these cuts could affect services like education, family planning, and disaster response, they are also expected to have a big impact on older adults, many of whom rely on Medicaid for health care and long-term care. This includes millions of seniors in nursing homes and those dual enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid. The changes could deeply affect a wide range of older Americans, from retired professionals to those with serious health conditions.
Naturally, this has created a lot of fear. But, what does this mean for you and your family?
First, there’s the potential that services that your family relies on may see cutbacks. Medicare and Medi-Cal might see issues with administration and funding of resources. Programs like Meals on Wheels are expected to see a reduced amount of funding, as well. Access to senior care may become more difficult in some communities.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that some experts believe that the area that is going to be impacted the most heavily is in regards to elder abuse. Many of the organizations and initiatives that are impacted by the cuts, both realized and proposed, provide safeguards for seniors and assist with reporting to agencies when it comes to elder abuse. Hopefully, this is something that never impacts you or your family. However, because this has the potential to impact many people, it is important for you to be aware of this and know what to do to help prevent abuse where you can.
Knowing about these potential problems gives your family an opportunity to take action before they have a negative impact on your family. For example, if you know that access to respite care is going to become more difficult, you can start to look for a solution well before respite is needed. Cutbacks can certainly be frustrating, but advanced knowledge can hopefully help you to offset some of these complications.
