Tips for Staying in the Home for Longer

  • Tips for Staying in the Home for Longer

According to a recent survey that was conducted by AARP, about 75 percent of older Americans wish to remain in their own homes as they get older.

Sometimes, in order for people to stay in their homes, the proper care and assistance isn’t enough to meet the needs of the person in care. Changes around the house might be needed, too. Some changes can be small and easy, such as making sure that rugs are secure and walkways are clear. Other modifications might require a little bit more work, such as the installation of handrails or supports around the shower.

Sometimes the modifications that are needed are more intensive. This is especially true for people that live in homes with multiple stories. Getting up and down stairs can become difficult or even impossible as people age. Some people in these situations may need help ensuring that their room is moved to an easy to access location, or even install a lift to make going up and down the stairs a lot easier.

Aging in place is easier now than ever before.

If you’re going to be hiring a handyman or a contractor to perform home modifications, make sure that you go with a professional that can be trusted. If you already know someone that is capable, great! But not everyone has these connections. Asking at the local hardware store, checking out social media, and reading online reviews can all help get you pointed in the right direction. Talking with friends and family can also help give you some guidance.

Services that deliver food and groceries can be a huge benefit too, especially for seniors that have trouble getting around or have transportation limitations. Other services can also make life easier for seniors by bringing social activities, entertainment, and necessities right to them.

Staying in your own home is important as you age. It’s familiar, it’s comfortable. It’s home. It is where you and your family have spent years living life. There are a lot of mental and physical health benefits to staying in your home, but the bottom line is that it’s what most people really want.
