Proper Dental Care Can Lead to Better Health in Seniors

  • Proper Dental Care Can Lead to Better Health in Seniors

Staying ahead of your dental health can have long term benefits on your overall health and wellbeing.

It’s long been known that poor dental health, including rotten teeth and infections, can lead to cardiovascular disease. However, as research continues to progress, the extent of how dental health impacts the overall body is becoming more fully understood.

For example, new research indicates that a successful root canal may have a profound impact upon health as people age. And this positive impact goes much further than just dental health. By resolving the potential of infection, this study states that people who avoid major dental issues through a root canal are more likely to avoid heart issues and other health maladies as they get older.

Clearing infection also seems to have a positive impact upon helping to minimize these health concerns as they get older.

The team used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to image the blood to look at proteins and other molecules in individuals with and without dental infections. They found that people that had had root canals to correct dental infections had lower blood sugar and lower levels of triglycerides. By reducing these levels, the individuals that were impacted had less risk of heart disease and diabetes. By addressing these issues, longer healthier lives were more likely to occur.

This research comes out of King’s College in London. They published their findings in the Journal of Translational Medicine. There’s a lot more research needed on this front still, but hopefully this is a step in the right direction when it comes to helping to address health issues before they become problematic in elderly individuals.

Dental health is a great example of how one seemingly small thing can have a profound impact on someone. Senior care is another component of this. Getting connected to the right senior care service for your loved one’s unique set of needs can go a long way toward helping them to live a higher quality of life.
