Small Diet Changes May Improve Heart Health

  • Small Diet Changes May Improve Heart Health

Eating salty foods may lead to a shorter lifespan.

That’s what new research coming out of the American Heart Association indicates. A study conducted out of France and the U.K. points to the idea that those who have diets that are overly rich in salt are at higher risk of stroke and heart attack. And with cardiovascular disease being the number one killer in the U.S. and several other parts of the world.

So many of the foods that we eat have extra salt added to them. Even if you are trying to stick to a healthy diet, odds are you are consuming more salt than you are probably aware of. This isn’t necessarily dangerous, but it is something that needs to be made aware. People that are at higher risk of heart disease especially need to be aware of this.

Reducing salt by a small amount might have a big impact on heart health.

This study didn’t focus on forcing people to change their eating habits. It looked at what changes in the food supply could do for overall health. The study concluded that lowering sodium (food salt) in takeout and other types of food could have a positive overall impact on the heart health of those that consume these foods. For example, in France, it was determined that lowering sodium levels by 0.35 grams in the most widely consumed types of bread would eventually contribute to about 1,000 fewer cardiovascular related deaths per year. In the U.K. the estimate was that reduced sodium levels would prevent about 100,000 cases of heart disease and prevent 25,000 ischemic strokes per year.

Already, many countries have initiated a focus on public sodium reduction because of the widespread health benefits that this has. In the U.S. this is not an adopted policy at this time.

This simple act would have a small, but very impactful, effect on lowering blood pressure in those that are at risk. The team published their findings in the journal, Hypertension. Hopefully, this helps researchers and policymakers to improve the quality of life that people experience.
