A new study has revealed a little bit more information than was previously held regarding the popular over the counter medication, acetaminophen. It doesn’t work just by blocking pain in the brain; it also works by blocking nerve endings within the body where pain might be experienced.
Acetaminophen, often referred to by its brand name: Tylenol, is an over the counter pain medication. The active metabolite of acetaminophen, AM404, works by disabling sodium channels within the body that carry pain signals to the brain. Pain is still experienced, but by the time the signal gets to the brain, it is diminished, helping people to stay comfortable even if they are experiencing something physically difficult.
The team believes that by targeting the AM404 metabolite, more effective ways of approaching pain treatment can be developed.
There are always side effects with medications and acetaminophen is no different. Even though this is an over the counter medication, it’s important to consult with a doctor before starting or changing how it’s administered. Over the counter meds can interact with other medications or health conditions in adverse ways. Working with a medical professional can help avoid this and ensure that you are taking all of your drugs in a way that is beneficial and not counterproductive to what you’re hoping to achieve.
The big takeaway from this research isn’t necessarily a deeper understanding of how acetaminophen works–although this is very important. The big news here is that it opens the door to a better understanding of how pain in general works–and creates new opportunities for doctors and researchers to increase their understanding and efficacy when it comes to treating those that are in pain. There is a lot of untapped potential when it comes to improving the quality of life that those suffering from chronic pain experience, and this seems to be a monumental step forward in potentially helping people in this population.
A large number of seniors deal with chronic pain on a daily basis. Helping these individuals to thrive is a high priority.
This research comes out of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The team published their findings in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA. Acetaminophen has long been viewed as a drug that can help reduce pain and fever. But by expanding our understanding of exactly how this medication works, we can use it more effectively in the future. Hopefully, this helps to better the health and welfare of seniors as a result.
Little steps forward can really add up when it comes to senior health. That’s why what happens on a day to day basis is so important. It’s why the senior care provider that you go with makes a world of difference.
