A healthy diet is a very important part of a healthy life. As you probably already know, diets that are rich in sugar, fats, and fried foods can often lead to health complications down the road. These things can be okay when consumed in small quantities, but over time, the negative impact on someone’s health can become more and more severe.
For seniors, choosing the right foods can make a big difference in someone’s health. With that in mind, here are a few ideas for you and your family when it comes to making healthy food choices.
Dark green, leafy vegetables tend to have huge health benefits. They are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. They also have been said to help remove free radicals from the body. Free radicals are associated with things like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Blueberries also have many of the same benefits. This fruit can help promote brain health in addition to other benefits.
Brussels sprouts also have a lot of health benefits to offer. This vegetable is packed with nutrients, and also helps to ensure that bowel movements maintain regularity–an issue that many seniors struggle with. Not everyone likes Brussels sprouts, so while it’s not quite as beneficial, cauliflower offers many of the same benefits.
These recommendations won’t work for everyone because of various dietary needs. In addition to issues like diabetes, obesity, diverticulitis, and other health issues, there are a lot of allergies and intolerances out there. The good news is that as a society, we are far more aware of varying dietary needs now than ever before. Things like food allergies existed thirty years ago, but they didn’t get the same kind of recognition and awareness that they do now. Things like gluten and lactose intolerances also existed, but they seemed far more rare than they are now.
Why this change has occurred (if it’s actually a change and not just a shift of awareness) is unclear. This discussion is beyond our present scope.
One of the often overlooked benefits of in-home senior care is that an in-home caregiver is often responsible for meal preparation. After all, eating is essential to stay alive and feeding is considered an activity of daily living, according to insurance companies. When someone is unable to complete an activity of daily living on their own, they become eligible for long term care, when insurance companies are involved.
