Every day, hundreds of families find that they need to make some major changes because an elderly parent or grandparent can no longer care for themselves like they once used to. For a while, this can seem like it sets the world on its side. The normal routine becomes a distant memory. The new normal is chaos. Just when we get used to certain aspects of our life, they seem to be cast into turmoil. For some, this is an awful thing. The goals and dreams of the family are set aside and the focus becomes on surviving each day.
Good senior care shouldn’t look like this. Change is inevitable, and it is never easy to see a person that you love struggle and need assistance. That person who was once so active and strong now seems frail and helpless. Care is needed and while it might be a major adjustment, it shouldn’t be a negative life event. Just like having a baby and caring for a child can be disruptive, it isn’t a bad thing. It’s just different.
Senior care isn’t bad, but it is different. But many families see this process as an awful event. Some of this can be attributed to poor caregivers. These are businesses and individuals that are in the business for the wrong reasons. It’s not the only thing creating this impression, though. In some cases, it’s the fact that families do not select the correct type of care. For example, having your loved one reside within a nursing home when that level of care is not helpful can do more harm than good. Trying to care for a loved one on your own when professional help is needed can also do more harm than good. Either extreme, or some of the many pitfalls in between, can create a negative care experience.
Many families experience this, and although it’s not always a negative experience, it certainly can be. When you are providing care for an elderly loved one without the proper training and experience, it’s stressful. When that stress is prolonged and you don’t have a decent way to handle it or to lighten the load from time to time, it takes an impact on your health, both mental and physical. And unfortunately, this is a reality for thousands of families at any given time in our country. It’s hard to tell for sure just how many because this is a grossly underreported statistic.
