On June 15th, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed. On this day, elder care professionals and many other people take a few moments to reflect on what elder abuse is and what we can each do to ensure that the likelihood of this occurring is reduced to zero.
This is a day dedicated to raising awareness. Elder abuse is a terrible thing and it takes a lot of different forms, from physical violence to covert theft. The person experiencing abuse might not even know that they are being taken advantage of. This isn’t a very widely known day, but it is a very important thing that it recognizes. No one deserves to live in fear, be exploited, or be taken advantage of. Every single person should be able to live a life free of these things.
Elder abuse awareness really should take place every single day, not just on June 15th. It should be at the forefront of our minds when we are caring for our loved ones and helping to get them connected to the resources that they need to thrive. Awareness of the potential for this can go a long way toward preventing something bad from happening in the future.
Elder abuse impacts many more people than what is first apparent. In fact, some resources indicate that more than half of the actual cases of abuse that are occurring do not go reported. It’s hard to say just how prevalent it is, but we do know that any instance of abuse, reported or otherwise, is unacceptable.
Things like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day help to spread awareness of the issue. Awareness is the first step to resolution. There’s a lot more that needs to be done beyond this, though. Hopefully, this is just the start of a wider movement that will help to keep more elderly folk safer and better connected to the help that they need. Hopefully, this growth in awareness will help save lives and keep people living a higher quality of life, too.
It’s important that you know what help is available in your surrounding community. If you’re unsure, give your county’s office a call. Someone there will more than likely be able to get you pointed in the right direction.
And if you’re unsure what senior care services are available, your county’s office is also a great place to start. We’re just one of the many high quality care services throughout the U.S. Getting connected with professional, skilled, loving care can go a long way toward helping the people that you love avoid the pain and humiliation that comes along with elder abuse. We go to great lengths to ensure that each and everyone of our staff members have gone through extensive background checks and are thoroughly trained so that an abusive situation never happens. If you’re in the market for a care service, ensure that whoever you go with also has protective measures in place.
