Staying connected to a loved one that is residing in a care facility can be a big challenge. Even if you live closeby, going somewhere to see your elderly loved one can be a big chunk of the day. Add in the check in processes and security measures that nursing homes and assisted living facilities have to keep residents safe and you have an experience that can be a lot more stressful than it should be.
COVID made staying connected even harder. But in some ways, it was a blessing in disguise. It showed us some new ways to stay connected to those that we love.
Video chat was one of the big things to come into the limelight during the pandemic. Video calls had been around for a while at that point but they weren’t being as widely used as they are now. They quickly became a part of our everyday life–and a whole lot more user friendly, allowing them to be more accessible to seniors.
Video chat also allows you to do activities together. Video calls can be made from almost anywhere, which allows your loved one to come along with you on trips in a way that might not have been possible physically.
But video chat doesn’t compare to in-person company. Luckily, with our understanding of the virus, vaccines, and other safety measures, it is easier to visit a loved one than it was at the height of the pandemic. Hopefully, we never see restrictions like that again. And if we do, we’ve learned a lot about safety and how to protect the elderly from illness so the measures will not be so severe.
In-home care is an option that should be considered. When someone is given care within the home, their physical needs are still being met by a professional, but there’s no need for arranging visits because your loved one is right where they have always been. No extra steps are needed.
To be clear, in-home care is not the right choice for everyone. It can be helpful for a lot of people, but it’s not always the best choice. There are a lot of situations where a nursing home or assisted living facility is the superior choice. This is why it’s so important that you consult with a professional before you decide on the care avenue that you will be going down. A professional that understands your loved one’s needs and how to best meet them will be an invaluable resource.
We would love to be that resource for you and your family. Our team of care professionals has years of collected knowledge, and with our free consultation service, we can go over your unique situation and help you to figure out what the best course of action will be.
