Telehealth has become a staple in a lot of our lives. It plays a large role when it comes to our health. When it comes to the health of our older loved ones, it has the potential to help prevent and address a lot of issues that might be present.
Telehealth isn’t new. It’s been around for several years, and was even being used in many settings prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since the pandemic began, we’ve really seen telehealth shift from a limited, rarely used tool, to something that almost everyone is familiar with.
For a lot of people, telehealth can make life a lot easier. This is especially true for those seniors that have difficulty leaving the house. Homebound seniors have long faced a unique set of struggles. A lack of medical attention is one of those issues. Telehealth can’t solve every situation, but it can be a good connector and help to identify ongoing issues and areas of need.
Really, it comes down to the situation that someone is facing. A telehealth appointment could be ideal for an intake appointment or a consultation. But if a more in depth need is being addressed, telehealth isn’t going to cut it.
Connecting with a medical professional over video chat has come a long way, but there are still times when an in-person visit is a must.
And that’s true of senior care, too. There are instances when connecting with someone over video can be helpful, but sometimes, the presence of an actual human is necessary. Humans are social beings, regardless of whether or not we are introverts or extroverts. We need human interaction to stay physically and mentally healthy. Periods of isolation can be a good way to recharge, but as someone ages and their needs grow in number and severity, isolation tends to be a bad idea.
Unfortunately, that’s the world that a lot of elderly folk live in. Getting connected to the right care and the right resources is a must if these at risk seniors are going to live the high quality of life that they deserve.
Video appointments can be helpful, but they can’t do everything.
Think about it like this: oftentimes, someone won’t want to move out of the home that they’ve lived a good portion of their life in. And that’s okay. There’s senior care out there that can help this happen. When coupled with telehealth alternatives, in-home care can go a long way toward allowing someone to live on their own for longer, enjoying their lifestyle as much as possible.
