A new research project has been focused on what steps can be taken to help those with Alzheimer’s disease by focusing on a drug that is commonly used for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
The medication, called glatiramer acetate, is a prescription medication that is currently used to help those that suffer from MS. However, a recently published paper states that there is evidence that this medication has been helpful for improving memory in lab mice.
The research team was based out of the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York. The researchers were quick to point out that this wasn’t a cure for Alzheimer’s–there is no known cure for the disease at this time. However, they do believe that this might be a step forward in the fight to improve the quality of life that those with the disease are facing. It might even bring researchers a step closer to finding a cure in the future.
The team published their findings in the journal, Frontiers in Neuroscience. Hopefully, this helps to inspire and guide future teams as they help get us all one step closer to a cure for this awful form of dementia.
As you probably already know, Alzheimer’s disease has a profoundly negative impact on someone. It is marked by memory loss, growing increasingly worse over time. This loss of cognitive function doesn’t just take place with memory. It impacts all parts of the body’s functioning and ultimately, the person suffering from the disease passes away from the disease.
Alzheimer’s disease can be difficult for an entire family, too. It’s not easy to see someone that you love and care about suffering as they lose their cognitive abilities. Seeing someone that you have seen most every day of your life suddenly forget simple things or to start behaving in a bizarre fashion can be incredibly upsetting.
If you have a loved one that is suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, there’s a good chance that you are either already involved with senior care, or you’re looking for ways to help make sure that your older mom or dad is getting the help, care, and love that they deserve. Finding the right senior care can be tricky, but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. There are a lot of resources out there that can be helpful.
Your first step is to find a care professional that you trust. Whether it’s a service (like what we provide here at Paradise In-Home Care) or a consultant, it’s vital that you are getting helpful, unbiased advice as you make your decisions.
In-home care might be exactly what you’re looking for. Studies show that in-home care can help reduce some of the stress and confusion that comes along with relocating someone suffering from dementia. It’s not always possible to do–each family is different. But when it works, it can be a huge burden off your shoulders.
