One of the greatest things about the internet is how easy it is to access information. In fact, there’s so much information on the web that it can sometimes be too hard to find the precise thing that you are looking for and a sort of information overload occurs. And while websites that attempt to help you distill this vast amount of info down to what you are looking for can be helpful, they can also detract from what you are doing.
First, know that search engines (like Google) work because of complicated algorithms that take your search terms and try to figure out what will be most helpful to you based upon that info. If you type in “senior care california” into a search, you will likely find many helpful things, but they will be dispersed throughout hundreds of sites that are not so helpful, too. This can make online searches for senior care services frustrating. Having a plan of attack before you begin will make life easier.
If you do need to do a web search for senior care (and you should, if only to familiarize yourself with what’s available in your area), then make sure you use your search engine correctly. Here are our top three tips to get the ball rolling.
- Be Specific: Don’t just type in “senior care.” Type in the specific type of care that you are looking for. Use “in-home care,” “in-home caregiver,” or “assisted living facility.” This will make sure that you are directed to what you’re looking for, and not just a care service that happens to have a lot of hits or good search engine rankings.
- Include City Names: Typing in the care you want is a start, but make it specific to your location. If you live near San Francisco, put that in with the search. Or, use terms like “Bay Area,” or “San Francisco Suburbs.” This ensures that you have the right care and that it’s going to be in a relevant location, and not the other side of the country.
- Don’t Stay on the First Page. You will find a lot of information on the first page of a web search, and sometimes you will find more than enough to get what you needed. But when it comes to senior care, this is hardly ever the case. You want to be thorough, and that means looking around and spending a lot of time searching through results. This is a loved family member that you are searching for, and not something trivial. Go to the second page, and much further. Search engine results do not equal real personal contact, so make sure you make phone calls to the services you do like and make appointments to check out what they have to offer.
The bottom line is that a web search is just the start. You want your loved one to have real care from real people, and that means human contact is necessary before you commit to anything. Be smart and ensure that you are giving your mom or dad only the very best service that you can find.
