There’s an interesting trend going on in Asia right now when it comes to senior care. Nurses in the the community and healthcare sector are leaving their positions so that they can more heavily focus on caring for the elderly.
In Singapore, some public hospitals have seen the number of nurses that specialize in senior care double over the last five years.
This is telling of what is occurring in the world right now. The number of senior citizens that are in our society has increased drastically over the last ten years and that number is going to keep going up. The Baby Boomer generation, those people that were born in the years directly following World War Two, is increasingly in need of assistance as they age.
Changing demographics inevitably leads to changing structures and infrastructures. These things aren’t always easy, but when they happen, it’s usually because they are quite necessary.
Change usually occurs really slowly in an industry–especially one like senior care. Typically, we don’t see major changes take place unless they are led by a change in law or policy. But thanks to the pandemic, a lot of changes have been occurring in the senior care business–and not all of these changes are because of changes that have occurred because of new legislation.
The pandemic has been an agitator for creating change. The COVID-19 pandemic was a huge tragedy, and seniors were easily the population that was the most heavily impacted. Unfortunately, lives were lost during this time. Some of these lives were lost because of how poorly some senior care services ran their businesses. Unfortunately, this has already happened, but that doesn’t mean that there are no lessons to be learned to help prevent more tragedies from occurring in the future.
This is the big reason why senior care is changing right now. Change, in this case, is a very good thing. Change means that seniors will get access to care that meets their needs in a safer, more accessible manner. There’s more of a need for change in care now than ever. Growing populations and growing needs equals a need for something different. As nurses change roles, as care services how they change how care is delivered, we are seeing care become better for seniors across the board. It might be slow, but it’s a process that leads to a higher quality of life for our loved ones.
