When someone needs senior care, it’s typically because their health or physical mobility has declined in a way that makes it difficult to take care of themselves in the way that they once did. This is never an easy time in life. It’s one that can be stressful for the entire family.
With that said, there are a few really easy things that you and your family can do to make the transition into any sort of senior care–whether it’s in the home or in a removed setting–a little bit easier for your older loved one. Even though it can be a tough situation, transitioning into this new stage of life can be made a little bit easier in many cases.
Here are a few things that you might find helpful.
The first is to ensure that the material comforts of home still exist. There is a reason why people prefer staying in their homes when they receive senior care: it’s comfortable and familiar. If your elderly family member is moving into an assisted living facility or another care center, ensuring that they can bring things that are important to them along with them can help to ease this situation. Pictures can be especially beneficial as they hold important memories and emotions. If someone is receiving in-home care, assurances that they are not losing any of their independence during that time can help. The point of in-home care isn’t to restrict freedom, but rather to enhance it.
Visits should be scheduled as often as possible with your loved ones, too. Being around people that you love and care about can make tough situations feel less threatening. Each care facility will have its own policies when it comes to visitors so make sure that you are familiar with this prior to making any commitments. The more that your loved one is able to spend their time with those that are close to them, the less it will feel like they have moved away from their home.
Speaking of visits, engaging with other residents of the care facility can help. Before my grandma passed away, we had become quite close to other women that lived in the same wing that she did. It helped my grandma make friends more easily and feel more at home, and it provided others with support, too.
