Ever since the COVID pandemic began, people with elderly family members have become a lot more aware of alternative types of senior care that exist. One of the sad realities of the pandemic was that those who were residing in nursing homes at the beginning of the pandemic were impacted in a much more severe manner than others within our community were. Because of the hurt caused by this, other forms of care have been more strongly considered than ever before.
When this is coupled with other issues going on within the world, it’s no surprise that refugees from war torn countries are finding solace in the care community. With war impacting countries like Ukraine, Afghanistan, and more, refugees from all over the world find safety in the U.S. But traditional methods of housing refugees don’t always have enough room.
Recently, a report came out of Seattle that indicated that refugees were finding housing and employment in a variety of senior care settings. With everything going on in the world, this makes a lot of sense. It provides opportunity and helps to fill an existing care need.
For some, this is ideal, but we also know that it’s not an option that will work for everyone. For one, conducting background checks of every single refugee that comes into the country would be impossible. From a safety perspective, it would be foolish to assume that every single person that was interested in providing senior care is there with pure motives.
This is why we conduct such thorough background checks on job applicants here at Paradise In-Home Care before we ever hire and train someone to come out to your home and help. We believe that this is an important part of connecting your family with the very best resources. The philosophy is that even though most people enter the field of senior care with great intentions to help other people, it’s better safe than sorry. History has shown that this isn’t the case a hundred percent of the times that people express interest in this work. Unfortunately, a few bad actors have made it so that this is a precautionary step that every single senior care company should take, just to be safe.
Additionally, we believe that ongoing training is essential for all of our caregivers. This way, our caregivers are always up to date with the latest in care techniques, they’re aware of medical and treatment breakthroughs, and they never get complacent when it comes to supervision. Unfortunately, so many abuse cases aren’t necessarily because someone was trying to take advantage of someone else, but rather that not quite enough assistance was given. Even neglect is a type of abuse.
The fact that refugees are finding solace in the care world is wonderful. Senior care is important because it helps a vulnerable population that can’t always fend for themselves. Refugees often fall into this category, too. However, it’s important that you know what options are out there and how to access them when looking for care for your family. Not all options will be great for everyone. Awareness is the first step towards finding the best possible care.
