A new study indicates that the timing of menopause beginning in a woman’s life may be related to the likelihood that a woman will experience muscle loss and some of the health complications that accompany this.
The study indicated that women who began menopause early were at a greater risk of significant muscle loss as they aged. Women who began menopause at a later than average age were more likely to retain muscle mass as they aged.
Generally speaking, muscle loss makes every day life a little bit harder. Meal prep, getting around the house, and other activities that are often taken for granted can become increasingly difficult in situations like this. Things like going for walks and other types of exercise can also be impacted. Exercise can do a lot when it comes to mental and physical health, such as preventing cardiovascular disease or even slowing down the spread of some types of dementia. As muscle loss becomes more severe, these activities can become tougher and tougher.
The good news is that muscle loss can often be combated. That’s one of the reasons why this study is so important. Recognizing that this is a possibility early on with some people can give doctors advance warning of the risk and allow for quicker, more effective intervention. Hopefully, this research leads to better outcomes for at risk females in the near future.
The research team published their findings in the journal, Menopause. The study was done in conjunction with The Menopause Society.
In addition to the above mentioned issues, muscle loss puts someone at risk of more detrimental injury if a fall or contact injury occurs. For example, someone with muscle loss does not have as much protection around their bones and organs as they once did. A fall could lead to a bone fracture or internal injury that wouldn’t have occurred as easily otherwise. Unfortunately, muscle loss isn’t just a weakening of strength issue; it puts someone at a greater risk of overall health complications.
No one wants to put their family in a situation where this is a possibility. Unfortunately, this is a reality for many people. Putting safeguards into place to keep at risk individuals safe can go a long way.
