Greater Action Needed to Fight Senior Care Worker Shortage

Greater Action Needed to Fight Senior Care Worker Shortage

The news has been covering President Biden’s infrastructure plan pretty closely as it moves throughout the legislative process. In the middle of this plan designed to help make navigating through the American system a little bit easier is a large section devoted to senior care. One of the big needs in the U.S. right now is more senior care workers. As the elderly population expands, many portions of the country are finding that they simply don’t have enough people working in this industry to meet the needs of the senior citizens in their community. A big push to get more people in this field is included in the proposed bill, and many smaller initiatives have focused on this, too.

Not only is there a caregiver shortage and a very clear need for more professionals to enter this field, there’s a big need for the companies that have senior caregivers on their staff to offer these individuals a lot more support than they are currently receiving. As some services see more people applying for these types of jobs, the need for supporting care workers has become far more obvious than ever before.

And it makes sense. This is a tough field and if employees are not being supported, there’s a good chance that they are not going to stay in this line of work for long. Many types of jobs carry a lot of stress with them, but there’s nothing quite like caring for other people. This is a special sort of stress, and the people in this field need a lot of support, regardless of how tough or emotionally resilient they might be.

A big part of the fight against a senior care shortage is ensuring that exisitng employees are well cared for.

Luckily, the pandemic has helped shed more light on this subject and care services around the country are doing more and more to help the people they employ. When they are cared for, the families that we serve are better cared for, too. Otherwise, efforts to hire more will fail.

Whenever someone works with older, ill, or fragile populations, an emotional toll is exerted upon the people that help. Although it’s not fully understood, working with vulnerable populations has a kind of second hand trauma that wears away on care workers. When your employer understands this and takes steps to help, the people that are out in the field doing the hard work can do it better and for longer periods of time.

Finding a care service that understands this and cares for the people that they employ is important. It is one more step that you can take to ensure that the people that you love are receiving the best care that they possibly can get.
