A new study points to yet another benefit of exercise. Exercise may have an impact when it comes to reducing the risk of brain hemorrhaging.
A brain hemorrhage occurs when a blood vessel breaks within the brain, or between the skull and the brain. As the rupture continues, pressure is put upon the brain. In some circumstances, this can lead to death.
However, when someone exercises, the amount of bleeding that occurs when a hemorrhage takes place is reduced. In a retroactive study, researchers found that there was a direct correlation between exercise and reduced bleeding risk. Those who regularly exercised were far less likely to suffer from severe hemorrhaging than those that did not exercise. For purposes of this study, regular exercise was defined as four or more hours of light activity, such as walking, gardening, or cycling, per week.
Essentially, what the researchers concluded was that exercise helps to protect the brain.
If you’re looking for just the right reason to exercise with more regularity, there are a whole host of reasons besides this. Brain health is a major factor, as is mental and physical health. Exercise helps on many levels. And like this study indicates, it doesn’t need to be as vigorous as you might think.
It’s important to know what a brain hemorrhage looks like so that you can better protect those that you love. You want to be able to detect a hemorrhage as early as possible as the sooner it is treated, the better the outcome is likely to be for the person experiencing this emergency. Some of the symptoms of a brain hemorrhage include, headache, one sided weakness of the body, seizures, vomiting, neck stiffness, and loss of consciousness. If you have concerns about a hemorrhage, it is vital that you call emergency services right away.
This study was conducted by the University of Gothenberg in Sweden. Hopefully, this study helps doctors to better understand this health event and get those in need connected to better care, sooner. There’s more work that needs to be done, of course, but this is a big step in the right direction when it comes to helping those in need. The research was published recently in the journal, Stroke and Vascular Neurology.
