Technology tends to be at the top of everyone’s list when it comes to keeping connected with others. If you’re like me, you’ve had countless Zoom and FaceTime meetings at this point and it’s very palpable that something is missing. Although you can see the person while you’re talking with them, there’s a sort of hollowness to it all. We all saw the viral video footage of the man being interviewed on television that was wearing a suit, but no pants, and we all laughed at it, but in a way it does point out the missing elements of video chat. It’s good for communicating, but it’s not that great for connecting.
So, if you can’t be physically with your loved ones this holiday season, what can you do?
Gifts are a small way to show that you care and to be there emotionally, even if you’re not there physically. I’m not talking about something commercial or purchased from a big box store. These things can be nice, but the best gifts always have a story behind them and always have a personal connection. If there’s no physical item that can accomplish this, a handwritten card or letter can do the same thing. Gifts are about showing that you care, and nothing lets a loved one know this in quite the same way.
Photo albums can do something similar. There are a variety of web outlets that will allow you to design your own for pretty cheap, too. This has been a tradition in my family for the last few years, and this year it’s something I’m looking forward to more than ever because of the distance.
This is helpful now because of restrictions in place due to the pandemic, but it also could be helpful for the future, if you can’t be with someone you love for some reason. Family is important, but sometimes we can’t be with the people that we love. It’s hard, but there are always things that you can do to make it easier.
And really, that’s the goal of senior care, too. We want to make your life a little easier. In-home care is designed to keep your loved one where they want to be, but also to allow a professional to help them get through each day. This takes some of the burden off of you so that you can continue with your career and other aspects of life, but still be fully assured that the people that you care about are safe and secure. It allows life to continue as normally as possible while still addressing the changing needs of your family.
Would you like to learn more about what this might look like for your family and your unique situation? Let us know! One of our professional caregivers would love to speak with you and your loved ones–over Zoom or another video chat if wanted–and let you know how care can help improve your family members’ lives. It’s a free service that we offer, and it’s designed to help you all.
