COVID’s Toll on Senior Care

May 17, 2022 by Matt Young Leave a Comment

COVID’s Toll on Senior Care

Our country just surpassed one million deaths due to or related to the COVID-19 virus. Each one of these deaths is an unspeakable tragedy, but unfortunately, the senior population has been hit much harder than others. About three-quarters of those that passed away were over the age of 65. More than half a million of those that passed away were age 75 or older.

And as the days go by, people continue to die from this illness. Even though the severity of COVID appears to be waning, there are still many cases out there. Even if the virus isn’t as virulent as it was a few months ago, there’s still way too many instances of it out there. Those with weakened immune systems or other health issues at play are at much higher risk of complications because of the illness. The more severe these things are, the greater the chance that someone can still pass away.

The threat has relaxed a little bit, but it’s still very real. Especially for seniors.

As a result of this, it’s necessary that some changes occur in the landscape of senior care in order to help keep the elderly as safe as possible. Quickly, we realized that a lot of the deaths that occurred in the senior population were preventable. Keeping people closed up in close quarters only helped the virus to spread more easily. We didn’t understand everything about the virus early on, but unfortunately, a lot of people lost their lives because of our misunderstandings. We have an obligation to make sure something like this is prevented as we move forward.

Senior Companionship

COVID has profoundly impacted senior care and its future–and that means better options as we move forward.

Senior care has already begun to change. COVID’s toll has been immense and many other industries beyond the care business are still trying to figure out how to adjust and continue to grow in the wake of COVID. We all are still learning how to deal with this tragedy.

What we’ve learned over the couple years that we’ve been grappling with COVID is that not every solution is perfect for everyone. Some things will help some families more than others. Depending on family situation, medical background, and individual goals, some senior care options will be better than others. Having more options helps to account for these differences more effectively. The nursing home might be great for some, but not for everyone.

Senior care is growing and changing–and that’s a very good thing. We have more options to help our loved ones than ever before. Nursing homes aren’t the only option. As people see that this model has some definite drawbacks, things like in-home care are growing rapidly in popularity.

We’ve been providing in-home care and other services for years. This is our specialty and we would love to share what we do with you. If you’re looking for a better care solution for your loved ones, or you just want to learn a little bit more about what’s out there, feel free to get in touch. One of our professionals would love to share what we do and how it might help you and your family get the help during the senior years that’s needed.
