The state of Minnesota’s legislature recently passed a bill that is designed to change elder care laws for the better. The Governor signed the law last week, allowing for a large number of changes–all of which are designed to help seniors receive a higher quality of care and to keep them safer during their senior years.
Some of the changes include patient rights issues within nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Under this new law, families would be able to install cameras in the rooms of their loved ones in order to help monitor their safety remotely and ensure that all needs are being met.
Additionally, those receiving care and their families would be protected from any sort of retaliation if they do bring an issue to the attention of state authorities. As long as reports are made in good faith, those that are involved in the care cannot take any sort of action against the person filing a claim. This might seem one-sided, but the goal is to protect the rights of seniors and help them to live a better life, one that is free of the fear of abuse or neglect. Better oversight and monitoring of all care facilities will also be included in this new law. Again, the goal is help the elderly live a higher quality of life.
There’s not always a lot that we can do when it comes to protecting our elderly loved ones with the law. In some states, senior care laws are very helpful, and in others they are not as strong. That’s why it is so important that families know what they need to do to best care for their loved ones. Each family situation is different, but luckily you know your family better than anyone else. Taking proactive steps to help your mom or dad to be as healthy and safe as they can be during this time of their lives will go a long way toward helping them to be happier.
Having a care service that you know and trust can also help in this regard. A lot of the new rules that Minnesota has enacted are in place to help prevent senior abuse from occurring. While this is definitely a good step, having trustworthy and knowledgeable people working with your parent to begin with is an even more effective step.
