A new law in Minnesota makes it legal to have surveillance equipment set up in the room of a senior citizen residing in a nursing home. The goal with this law isn’t to infringe upon the privacy of an individual, but to keep them safe from abuse. Unfortunately, there have been enough instances of abuse reported, many of which were not discovered until well after the fact, that this type of action has become necessary.
Minnesota is not the only state to have approved a law like this. And in most of the instances, the presence of a camera needs to be made known to the nursing home that is responsible for care. The camera cannot be covered or tampered with.
You’ve probably figured this out by now, but the odds of a camera catching any sort of abuse in action is very small. No one that knows they are being watched is going to do something illegal. The camera is a deterrent, a preventative measure.
Ultimately, surveillance systems are not the answer. They might help to catch criminal acts, and their presence might even detract a few instances of abuse from happening. This is a good thing. But in the end, it’s far better to just go with a care service that you trust. Whether you use cameras or not is up to you. They can provide peace of mind and and have been shown to help improve safety. But again, being confident that your loved one is receiving the very best care possible is a much better alternative.
No one wants to have to use a camera or some other type of system to make sure that a loved one is getting the care and attention that they need. But, if the technology exists and it has been deemed necessary then it is good to have this available as an option. So for those in Minnesota and other states that have approved similar laws, this is a big win. It is one step forward in the fight to make sure that all seniors have the safe care that they are entitled to.
