It’s no secret that the U.S. economy is in need of more people working. In most parts of the country, you can’t travel too far without seeing “Now Hiring” or “Help Wanted” signs.
There are a wide variety of reasons why some types of jobs don’t have enough staff. For example, some high stress jobs, such as teachers and social workers, just do not pay well enough to attract a large number of employees. It can be hard to attract a large talent pool to a stressful job when something less stressful is paying the same amount of money–or even a little bit less. One of the things that we’ve seen more and more since the pandemic is that people are more willing than ever to sacrifice finances for comfort and peace of mind.
One of the things that I’ve personally observed in my own work life is that stress is inevitable in any field. Finding a career that I was passionate about was the key to making that stress manageable. When you do what you love, the stress is much easier to handle.
Another barrier for potential employees can be childcare. Childcare is expensive and many find that it’s more cost effective to leave the workforce altogether than it is to pay a daycare or babysitter to watch after kids. Unfortunately, this can exclude a lot of good workers from entering the workplace. It might save costs, but it can hinder companies from growing.
The senior care industry is impacted by all of these barriers, and more. Being a senior caregiver can be a stressful job. Many senior care services don’t pay employees what they are worth. A lot of potential caregivers have children that they are also caring for.
There are multiple ways to help combat this. Some employers are offering childcare to help encourage employees, but this isn’t available on a widespread basis. At a community level, local governments will often help offset or even cover the cost of child care to help encourage people to enter the workforce. If you’re unsure if you and your family will qualify for this, reaching out to your local county government can help answer questions that you might have.
