The traditional model of senior care has been shaken up ever since the COVID-19 pandemic.
It isn’t a surprise. The pandemic has changed how we think about a lot of things, why should senior care be any different?
A shift in our collective thinking about what care is supposed to accomplish is behind all of this. Senior care isn’t just about keeping people alive. At least, it shouldn’t be. It should be about helping people to live their lives the way that they want to, even as they grow older and battle various physical and cognitive difficulties.
An approach that allows seniors to live their lives the way that they have been–the way that they want to–tends to help. Something that allows seniors to do the things they enjoy, connect with the people that they have been close with, and to maintain as much independence as possible allows them to get the care that they need but make minimal changes to the lifestyle that they are accustomed to.
There are a number of different ways to achieve this. But really, the care that someone receives really depends on what their needs are.
The majority of the time, seniors do better in care when their care focuses on their unique set of needs. Each person is an individual, with unique needs, goals, and desires. The best thing for one person is not always going to be the best thing for another. An individualized approach to care is needed in order for someone to get the most out of it.
With that said, sometimes the traditional models of care are the best. There’s a reason why nursing homes and assisted living facilities have long been the dominant models for how senior care is administered.
But change isn’t a bad thing. For things to improve, change is needed. A greater focus on the needs of the individual is vital to ensuring that each person receiving care has the experience that they need to thrive as they age. That’s not a bad thing by any measure.
We pride ourselves here at Paradise In-Home Care for being able to deliver a customized approach to senior care. It’s one of the joys of being a smaller care service with a focus on in-home care. At the same time, we know that it’s not the perfect choice for everyone.
