Politicians are focusing more and more on fixing the aspects of senior care that are not working. As you probably know, one of the main points of senior care is to help the elderly stay safe and healthy. If there are parts of care that are not allowing this to happen or if they can be improved upon, then they certainly should.
But this is a complicated issue. There are a lot of things that laws can do, but not everything can be fixed with more laws. Some of it comes down to personal responsibility.
For example, some states have reported issues when it comes to how Medicaid money is used, especially when it comes to institutionalized care, like what you would find with a nursing home. Many nursing homes that accept Medicaid dollars are not legally obligated to use that money solely for the care of seniors that use Medicaid. It has created loopholes that allow nursing homes to use money that doesn’t necessarily improve the care that their residents receive. Now, this is not to say that every single nursing home or facility does this. But some do. Luckily, a lot of states that don’t already restrict this from happening are starting to crack down on this practice.
Most of the issues that exist with the senior care system existed long before the COVID-19 pandemic began. It’s been a blessing in disguise, but the pandemic has been instrumental at bringing a lot of these issues to the national stage’s attention. By putting the spotlight on these issues, there is a greater chance that something can be done about it. It’s an unpleasant situation all around, but the hope is that the increased attention will help to resolve it. The elderly people in our lives deserve better, hopefully this helps to make it happen.
