Recently, I published an article about the importance of research and how research is one of the driving factors that helps to improve treatment and care for everyone–including seniors and their care. In that blog, Cognitive Functional Therapy (CFT) was mentioned along with the fact that it wasn’t as helpful for treating back pain as originally thought.
What is CFT? What is it used for? Hopefully, this follow up piece can help shed some light on CFT and how it might be helpful for you and your family. But remember, just like with any other piece of health advice you might come across, please speak with your doctor before making any significant changes to your daily routine. Medical advice should never be taken lightly and always under the guidance of a professional.
CFT is a type of therapy that was originally designed to assist with lower back pain. It takes a multidirectional approach in the treatment of pain, acknowledging that pain happens for a wide variety of reasons. It also acknowledges that pain happens along a wide variety of intensities. For some it is an annoyance, for others it is completely disabling. CFT aims to treat pain with flexibility, using psychology and individualized physical therapy to help reduce and treat the pain that people with chronic lower back pain experience.
CFT also uses tools like education, exercise, and lifestyle coaching to help people address the underlying factors that may cause or exacerbate chronic back pain. It is a relatively new type of treatment, with publications dating back to only 2018. However, in that short amount of time, it has gained a level of respect and acceptance in the medical community. The fact that it is being used to treat chronic back pain–something that needs a lot of attention in the world of research–has helped it to become popular quickly.
And while updated research regarding cognitive functional therapy indicates that it might not be the wonder cure that some originally thought it might be regarding back pain, there is a statistically valid level of help that some people experience when it comes to reducing pain. There is evidence out there that some people do benefit from this type of treatment. Finding the specific treatment methods that will work for you may take some trial and error–so please speak with a doctor when addressing lower back pain or any other health issue.
The right choices for you and your family might not look exactly like what they look like for others. Everyone has different needs.
