A change in pleasure derived from eating might be one of the causes of obesity in those that suffer from chronic pain, according to a newly published study.
When it comes to chronic back pain, there is a high correlation of obesity. Researchers have observed this for quite a while, but they haven’t been sure just why this is. In the observed study, it was found that although the type of food ingested by those struggling with chronic pain–and then obesity–the caloric intake did not change. The researchers believe that it is not a change in calories or a sudden change in exercise habits that led to obesity in this study, but rather a change in the types of foods being consumed. More fat was consumed by those that suffered from chronic back pain than prior to experiencing pain.
There are some serious side effects to obesity, as you are probably already aware. Heart disease, diabetes, and other health complications can all be exacerbated because of obesity. Taking steps to maintain a healthy weight early on in life will not guarantee that this isn’t a problem later on, but it can help to reduce its likelihood. Working with a doctor to set and keep yourself at a target weight is a healthy choice, even if it is a difficult thing to do. It’s important to be aware of this, but working with a doctor to get you to where you want to be will help to make this more of a reality.
Throwing in a complication like chronic pain can make this far more difficult to achieve, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Understanding why eating or activity levels or changing is an important part of helping those that struggle to take action and help improve their health.
