A new study found a correlation between those that experience quality sleep and have healthy cardiovascular systems. People who sleep well on a nightly basis tend to have healthier hearts than those who don’t sleep well.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that those who don’t sleep well on a nightly basis are going to have heart disease. And it doesn’t mean that those who sleep well are immune to experiencing issues. But poor sleep can be an indicator of a deeper issue. In fact, the research team believes that about seven in ten people who experience heart disease could see improvement in their health if sleep issues were rectified.
This study focused on quality of sleep in general, and not just one or two issues like past studies have done. The focus on quality of sleep is important because it accounts for a wide range of potential health issues and shows just how important sleep is in our lives.
This research came from the European Society of Cardiology. The hope is that doctors can look at sleep and be more proactive at detecting and treating heart disease if it is present. Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. and better detection has the capability of saving lives. Over 7,000 people were examined for this study, and various differences were accounted for in the sample, helping to ensure that this was a statistically valid study.
This study comes not long after another study indicated that people who required frequent naps were more likely than the general population to suffer from heart disease. It’s important to note the differences between these two studies. The study discussed here in this blog refers to the quality of sleep that someone receives during the typical night time sleep cycle. Getting quality sleep on a nightly basis has the potential to alleviate someone’s risk of experiencing heart disease. The previously published study looked at the need for naps throughout the day and indicated that people who napped on a regular basis were more likely to suffer from heart disease. One points to regular sleep while the other points to sleep throughout the day, when sleep shouldn’t be as necessary.
