Technology is becoming more and more prevalent in the world of senior care. In fact, many experts out there have gone as far as to say that smart technology is a vital part of every single person’s senior care set up.
What does this mean? And more importantly, does smart technology need to be a part of everybody’s care in order for that care to be of a high quality?
Smart technology can help seniors by allowing them to age in place, but still receive some of the attention that they would if they were placed in a care home. This can take the shape of video chats, voice activated alerts, and even warning systems that can detect falls and other injuries. At this point, smart tech has advanced enough that they are becoming more and more commonplace.
They do have a legitimate role in the world of senior care, but these devices are not necessarily perfect for everyone. For one, even though prices have come down considerably, they are still out of reach for a lot of people when it comes to cost. Additionally, they are not always easy to use. Many seniors struggle with technology for various reasons. For this population, smart homes would only frustrate, and not be much of a help.
Smart technology can be really helpful for some people, but just because it works for some people doesn’t mean that it’s going to work for everyone. When it comes to technology, there are certainly some positive aspects, but these might be more of a hindrance than a help for some people. Unlike younger folk, seniors didn’t grow up with technology. While using smart devices is second nature for the younger generations, older individuals don’t have the same level of adeptness.
Additionally, technology doesn’t replace human contact. A smart bed might be able to determine if someone is unable to get out of bed or doesn’t make it into their bed at night and send out an alert, but a person can determine this instantly. A trained caregiver can do so much more than all of the smart devices combined.
And a computer cannot provide companionship like a person can. There’s nothing that can replicate the attention and warmth that another human can provide. Even the most helpful of devices cannot do this, nor will they ever be able to.
