If you have ever provided care to a loved one or family member, you know just how hard it can be.
And you’re not alone. It’s estimated that about 38 million people in the U.S. provide family care to a loved one each year. It’s a hard, unpaid, and sometimes thankless job. It’s stressful, demanding, and exhausting. But care is something that absolutely must happen, regardless of how hard it might be.
What’s the solution to this? It will differ from person to person and from family to family, of course. But there are some general concepts that will benefit everyone, no matter where they are in their life. Hopefully, this short blog post can help a little bit at easing the burden of family care.
The first thing that you can do is to know what resources are out there. There are a lot of them, including professional care services, like nursing homes and assisted living facilities. There are also services that can help to alleviate the pressure on families such as non-profits and faith organizations. More than likely, you also have friends and family members that you can rely on to help out with senior care.
The second thing to do is to know which of these resources will be helpful for your family. The above list of community and family resources is by far from a complete list–there are far more things out there that can help you than what could possibly fit in an article like this. But only a small portion of them are actually going to help you in the way that you want. Knowing what can benefit your family and meet you where you are, with all of your unique goals, desires, and needs, is an essential part of making the care process easier.
Financial resources might also be a concern of yours. Insurance policies can cover some of these costs, but these are only helpful if they are in place prior to being needed. After the fact, paying for care can be a little bit more difficult. But there are resources out there that can help with that, too.
I don’t know what you’re up against, as a caregiver or in any other aspect of your life. But I do know that we all need support now and then. Sometimes we only need a little bit, and sometimes we need a lot. I don’t know where you are at this point in your life, but I do know that there are people and organizations out there that can help make it a little bit easier.
