One of the worries that many seniors experience as they age is that when it is time for them to need senior care that the resources won’t be in place to help them. This is a valid concern, especially as many seniors no longer have the ability to work and create resources for themselves like they once did. Changing demographics could add to this worry.
Additionally, many believe that the individuals who will make and influence the landscape of the care economy will not know what the needs and desires of the senior population are. From this position of ignorance (voluntary or involuntary), seniors might be short changed when it comes to access to the ideal type of care.
But there’s hope out there, too. Even over the last few years, senior care has changed dramatically. The pandemic played a large role in this, unfortunately. The conditions of many care facilities were exposed to the general public because of the widespread issues that the virus brought about. The reality is that a lot of people died during this pandemic, so it really is worthwhile for us to look at any lessons that could be learned by it.
While the vast majority of senior care facilities and nursing homes weren’t doing anything wrong or dangerous to senior health, they were also quite inflexible in how their care and attention was applied to seniors. This inflexibility took a huge toll on the mental health of those receiving that care. We know that there are solutions to this, luckily.
Changing demographics makeup should never mean that a loved one gets less than the best when it comes to care. Seniors always deserve the very best care that they can get, regardless of their surroundings, or any of their personal characteristics. Just like it would be wrong to deny someone assistance because of their race or gender, denying someone access to the best care possible because of the demographics of their community seems like an intolerable type of injustice.
One way that you can help combat this is to ensure you have a plan in place long before senior care is ever needed. This doesn’t necessarily change anything, but it does help to ensure that you have a clear sense of direction when the time for senior care is needed. A plan helps to streamline things in the future.
We’d like to help you with that plan. And if you’re in a different stage of the care search, we’d be happy to help with that, too.
