A recently published story out of Dublin illustrates just how important family and the bonds that we form over time are when it comes to senior care. A couple named Bud and Audrey both moved into an assisted living facility that specializes in memory care so that they could remain together–even though Audrey doesn’t suffer from dementia. Audrey wanted to remain with her husband of more than 60 years even though he was receiving more than adequate care alone. She had lived with him for so long that she did not want to be away from him, and it has proven to be beneficial for both of them.
When someone with dementia is removed from a familiar setting, it can be detrimental to their health. They may see a decline in their cognitive health as well as their physical health. This can be temporary in nature, but it really depends on the individual. It can be permanent and hasten their overall decline in health. It might be necessary for other reasons to remove someone from their home, but not always.
Seeing Audrey being so willing to move in with Bud to ensure that he has all of the help that he needs is heartwarming. We all want to see uplifting care stories come true in the lives of those that we love. In a perfect world, there wouldn’t be any sort of care issues and everyone would have access to precisely the care that they needed right when they need it. But as great as this would be, it is not how reality works. There will be people out there that don’t have the help that they need. There will be people that slip through the cracks and are under served.
We want to do our best to reduce the odds of this happening. We want to make sure that as many people in our communities that need help as they age have access to that help. We know that this isn’t possible and we know that we cannot serve every single person out there, but we’re going to do our best to help those that we can.
