New research indicates that the risk factors for dementia might change over time. The researchers behind this study believe that a more thorough understanding of this may lead to earlier diagnoses of dementia later on in life, and thus, earlier treatment for those that are suffering from this.
For example, researchers recently found that people who had been diagnosed with diabetes prior to the age of 55 were four times more likely to develop dementia later on in life than those that didn’t have diabetes at age 55 or before. People with high blood pressure prior to age 55 were also more likely than those without to develop dementia.
At age 65, people who had been diagnosed with heart disease but had not had a stroke were twice as likely to develop dementia later on in life than those who did not have heart disease. By age 70, the combination of diabetes and stroke led to an increase in the risk of developing dementia.
Dementia is complex. No two people are impacted in quite the same way. Additionally, there are many different types of dementia. For those that aren’t familiar with all of the different diseases and conditions that exist, it can be a bit more difficult to recognize what is happening and then take the appropriate action.
Alzheimer’s might be the most common and well known type of dementia out there, but it’s certainly not the only type that exists. Although familiarizing yourself with dementia and what it looks like can help, it’s important that you work with a doctor with experience in geriatrics and dementia is very important. If you’re unsure of where to start, have a conversation with your primary care physician. They will be able to help you get the ball rolling.
The same goes for senior care. It can be hard to get the ball rolling but oftentimes, it just takes a simple conversation to find what you’re looking for. Talking with a doctor or another professional can let you know what resources your loved one needs in order to thrive with care. They can also help you to know what’s available locally in your community.
When someone needs senior care, it can be tough on the whole family. When dementia is in the picture, it can be even more complicated. Caring for someone with dementia is never easy, but having a trained professional on your side can make it a little bit easier. That’s one of the things that we pride ourselves in providing. Memory care is one of the most important things that we do here at Paradise In-Home Care, and we would be happy to talk more with you and your family about what we do.
