Right now is a good time for care professionals to start rethinking how senior living is delivered. With COVID-19 causing so much distress within the senior community, this is a perfect opportunity to present a better service for the people that we work for. What this should look like will be determined by different needs and situations, but there is a clear need for change.
The needs of seniors around the world are changing, and as a result, senior living (and other senior services) need to change to meet those changing needs. With more use of technology, better attention to medical and emotional needs, and more, the services that are presented for seniors can be improved upon. This is a wonderful opportunity to make sure that we are focused on giving the older individuals in our lives the high quality services that they deserve.
If the COVID pandemic has made anything clear, it’s that we do need to change how we think about our older loved ones and the care that they receive. In-home care has been a huge blessing for many people, but it isn’t perfect either. These past two years have been challenging to say the least, and they have brought up a lot of questions. Some have been incredibly helpful for us and have helped us to take a look at the service that we provide and start moving in a direction that places the safety, health, and happiness of the elderly individuals that we serve. Not just for our service, but for the seniors across the country.
And while we have gained some ground, there’s room for a lot more progress to be made still. Awareness–where we are now–is just a beginning. The next step is to take action where we can. How can we make positive changes that impact the people that we are close to? How can we ensure that some of the pitfalls that were exposed by the pandemic don’t ever happen to the people that we love?
Change needs to start small. We can’t rewrite laws or institute broad, sweeping policies that will make everything better right away. This would be wonderful to see happen, and it might happen in the future. But it’s not something that we should rely on occurring in the near future. Until there are real, sustainable changes put in place, it’s important to look at how we can change senior living for those in our own spheres of influence so that they have a higher quality of life, with less exposure to the risks and dangers of inadequate care.
Start with what you have now that is already working. No one’s situation is perfect. But at the same time, no one’s in a place where absolutely nothing is going right for them. Look at what works, and build upon it. Then begin to tackle the areas of improvement. Things like cost of care, finding the right set of professionals, and the right location for care might take some extra time, but when you work from your strengths, the weaknesses can be overcome with less stress in your life.
