When someone suffers from a stroke, they are faced with a long road to recovery. In some cases, that recovery is never quite complete. Senior care is partially aimed at helping those that have had a stroke better handle their activities of daily living. In-home care is just one way that this is done. If you’ve had a stroke, or have a parent or grandparent that has had one, you probably have questions about how long term care can serve your family. If so, get in touch with a customer care specialist so that you can have your questions answered before an urgent situation arises.
Recently, researchers discovered a molecule that has the potential to help trigger healing in the brain after a stroke takes place. A stroke blocks oxygen flow to the brain for a short period of time, and disability can occur as a result. Speech can become much more difficult, walking and coordination can become very stressful, and getting through the day can become almost impossible in some instances. When you have a loved one that has had a stroke, your biggest wish is usually that they go back to the way that they were. If this new line of research is correct, it’s getting closer to happening, though.
A molecule called GDF10 has been shown to help neurons grow more connections. When someone has a stroke, brain cells can die, making the brain’s old ways of relaying messages no longer possible. But if brain cells can form new connections, redirecting signals becomes easier and the brain can allow the body to recover more thoroughly. The study spanned nearly five years, and it yielded what will hopefully be very helpful news. GDF10 is naturally released when a brain is trying to heal itself, and its full potential was found when it was isolated and studied in a controlled setting. If they find a way to increase the brain’s level of this molecule, or to artificially introduce it, it could make stroke recovery faster. It could even have the potential to help with other diseases, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. All of this remains to be seen.
After the damage of a stroke has been done, keeping your loved one safe and well cared for is a must. Early detection of a stroke is the best way to speed up a recovery, but by helping the body recover faster, you can improve the quality of the lifestyle of your loved one. It’s not always possible depending upon the severity of the stroke, but if you are able to, the little steps to help improve lifestyle will be important. Finding the best type of long term care for a loved one going through stroke recovery is one of the bigger steps that you will take when it comes to making sure that your family is well looked after. Senior care is a big deal, and having the right kind will make life so much better for your loved one in need and the rest of the family, too.
