All over the world, life expectancies are going up, both for men and women. The big reason for this is that there has been a huge reduction in the number of deaths from major diseases. These include ischemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These three illnesses have a huge impact upon senior citizens and accounted for about 32 percent of all deaths around the globe in 2013. The number of people that have died from these diseases has gone up a lot, but that’s only because the global population has gone up even more. The fact that these diseases are impacting senior citizens less means that something is being done right.
Better senior care is certainly a big part of why this is happening. Caring for the elderly within our communities helps them to not only live longer, but have a higher quality of life in the meantime. With in-home care specifically, there is less shock on our older loved ones when they start receiving senior care because there is much less trauma due to the fact that no relocation is needed. Getting care can be difficult, of course, but by keeping it in the home and helping to maintain their current lifestyle as much as possible, you are helping your loved one meet their needs, increase their happiness, and stay in a place that they love.
Different portions of the world saw different causes of death that were most prevalent. Low income nations saw issues with diarrheal diseases and malaria, while middle income nations are beginning to grow closer to high income nations in what their major causes of death are. Another major trend is the fact that children are living longer, which means that the population is aging. Inevitably, this will lead to more senior citizens around the world.
And while these reductions in deaths are definitely a good thing, the bad news is that there has been an increase in deaths that are easily preventable, such as those associated with drug and alcohol use. Still, around the world, the average age of death has gone up by over 12 years to almost 60 years of age. In the United States, that age is just under 80 years old, and it seems that the rest of the world is catching up. Besides increasing the quality of people’s lives, it will almost guarantee that there is a higher demand for senior care in the future. By providing this for your elderly family members now, you are getting ahead of the game and ensuring that their care is secured well into the future. The worldwide average is still far below that of the United States, but the good news for everyone is that progress is being made on many fronts. If we continue to do our part by providing the best senior care for our elderly loved ones, the lives of the people that we love will be nothing but better.`A good senior care model here will eventually translate to better senior care around the world.
