Scientists hope that through improved observation methods of stroke victims they can keep better track of how the recovery process is going. In a newly published study, researchers found that tracking iron measurements when someone is going through the recovery process after a stroke might help doctors and therapists to make changes that can benefit the patient and even help improve the odds of a recovery after a stroke has occurred.
When someone suffers a stroke, long term or permanent disability may occur because of the death or degeneration of brain tissue. A stroke occurs when there is a momentary blockage of oxygen to the brain, causing the above mentioned issues. The road to recovery can be quite difficult for someone who has suffered from a stroke, and supervision or even professional senior care can become necessary for the person who has had a stroke.
It seems that by keeping tabs on iron levels within certain parts of the brain, doctors can tailor rehabilitation methods to help optimize a patient’s chances of recovery. Currently, there’s still a lot of information that doctors are lacking when it comes to best helping their patients through therapy and other treatments after a stroke. This might be one of the missing clues that’s needs to help improve the recovery process for someone who has suffered from a disability because of a stroke.
Before this study, iron levels had only been observed in a post-mortem setting. Although it was clear that there was some sort of relationship between the two, no one was really sure what it was or how to effectively monitor it. There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done in this area, but doctors are closer than ever to understanding the role that iron levels play, and how they might be used to help those who are suffering from the after-effects of a stroke.
This study was conducted by the Radiological Society of North America. Their findings were published in the journal, Radiology.
