California has some great resources for the elderly population, especially those that are in need of care. Whether you have questions on finding care, or something more general, like staying as healthy as possible as you age, there are agencies out there that are geared toward helping you out. And the best news is is that many of these programs are completely free of charge to take advantage of.
The best place to start is with the California Department of Aging, an agency of the state government. There is a ton of information on their site, and they can help you to find further resources if you need them, such as access to Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program. One easy tab on their pages lets you search for any service that you can think of based upon the county that you live in. It’s a starting point for sure, but if you are unsure of what you need for your elderly family member, this can be a good place to start. They can even help you find senior care, if you need it.
One growing trend happening in California and elsewhere throughout the United States is that the elderly population is getting much bigger. Unfortunately, for some people this means that certain services could be more difficult to find. The good news is that in the Bay Area senior care is abundant, and much of it is high quality senior care. There are plenty of trustworthy in-home care services and assisted living facilities to choose from, and in the end, the person receiving care (and their families) are the winners. It’s always a good idea to find your care from a list of reputable service providers first, since this means that they are at least recognized by your local authorities as being a great caregiver service.
But that doesn’t mean that it’s right for you and your loved one. You will still want to look at these yourself and make your own opinion before you make a commitment. Sometimes, things like customer reviews and comments can be found here, and this can help make your decision simpler, too.
The benefit of using a catchall agency website is that they can get you assistance beyond senior care, too. Simple things like tips on staying healthy, getting more exercise, activities especially planned for senior citizens, medication management, and other topics of interest are often advertised or linked to on these sites, and this is a good way to keep yourself up on what’s going on in the community and staying on top of what you need to know to help your elderly loved one as much as possible. Having an older relative in need of more assistance than before is tough mentally, but with a compiled list of things you need to know, you can make it a little bit easier on yourself. It’s just a little help, but it can be invaluable when you are already facing the stress of having someone that you care about being in need.
