When it comes to the senior years, men and women face a sizeable discrepancy when it comes to how safe and secure they feel. In a recent survey, it was found that 30 percent of women worry about money during their senior years, while only 20 percent of men find themselves in this situation.
Women face a unique set of challenges during their senior years. Part of this is because of lower wage earning ability during their working years. Unfortunately, women have historically earned less money than men.
This is an indicator of our society in general. Men have long held advantages that women could only dream of. This is still in the process of changing. Women have come a long way over the last couple decades, but there’s still a long way to go if women are going to have equal footing, both when it comes to access to care and in other aspects of life. This is a societal level issue, but even though there’s a long way to go, we are making progress. It’s important to stay aware of this issue, continue to be vocal about it, and support our loved ones in any way we can. Men and women do have differences in some respects, but when it comes to thriving, we all deserve this. Taking steps towards advancing the rights of women is an ongoing task.
Women and men both deserve high quality care. Although statistically women might be more prone to suffering hardships during this stage of life than men are, it’s important that we do everything on our own levels that we can to ensure that the people around us have the very best care possible. This might mean making sacrifices in our personal lives to give those that we love more attention and help around the house. It might mean working with a team of professionals to ensure that all of our elderly loved one’s needs are being met and accounted for. Each situation will look a little bit different and our roles might look different, but in the end that is all okay as long as the people that we care about are getting the help, love and attention that they need to thrive.
