Newly developed technology is making the fight to help those recovering from a stroke a little bit easier. A new computer system has been shown to be effective in identifying and counting arm and other motions in those going through stroke rehab.
Although this might not sound like a big deal at first, this technology has the potential to be effective in helping to improve the quality of the rehabilitation program that someone is going through. Better rehab has the capacity to lead to a more complete recovery. The research team states that the next step is to fine tune this technology so that it can track and record the intensity of movements so that it can be used to tailor suit rehab activities to more fully meet the needs of the person going through rehab.
The research was conducted by a team based out of the NYU Langone Health facility. They published their findings in the journal, PLOS Digital Health. It is a great example of the kinds of benefits that doctors can find when technology is leveraged to help improve the health of people in various states of health and recovery.
A stroke is a life changing event. Many who suffer from a stroke eventually see a full recovery, but this isn’t the case for everyone. When someone has a stroke, immediate treatment is important. If treatment occurs within the first two hours after a stroke begins, the odds of a full recovery go way up. But again, this isn’t what always happens.
This is why improvements in stroke recovery and rehabilitation are so important. When these things improve, the quality of life for everyone improves. No one wants a loved one to suffer from a stroke, but if they do, a speedy and complete recovery is always a better option than permanent disability. Using technology and advanced understandings of how it can help to improve on current treatments is an intelligent and effective way to make life a little bit better for those that are struggling.
A stroke is never easy. But knowing that there’s more hope than ever before for those that are at risk or recovering is encouraging. Hopefully, this continues to keep improving over the coming months and years. More research is needed, of course. But now that researchers better understand this angle, it should be easier to conduct.
