According to current research, urinary tract infections are very common in females. About half of all females will suffer a urinary tract infection (UTI) during their lifetime. About a quarter of women will suffer from recurrent UTIs–meaning that they will have two or more during the span of a six month period.
Many that have experienced chronic UTIs feel helpless, hopeless, and defeated when it comes to managing their health. Unfortunately, this is true for a lot of seniors, especially as health issues become more severe or more complex. Oftentimes, doctors will prescribe antibiotics for this, but many women who have had this issue frequently experience complications because of frequent antibiotic prescription. Alternatives, such as frequent water consumption and ibuprofen can also be helpful, and some may find it preferable. This should not be attempted unless under the guidance of a doctor, though.
Frequent infections can lead to fever, pain, more severe infections (such as in the bladder or kidneys), and more severe health issues. Managing this is crucial. Any discomfort or pain can lead to a decreased quality of life. Obviously, we want everyone we work with to have the best senior care experience possible. Helping to eliminate UTI issues can sometimes be a part of this.
One of the best ways to avoid chronic infections is to speak with a doctor familiar with you and your situation and put some safeguards in place. Sometimes, chronic infections occur because of another underlying medical condition. Addressing this thoroughly is important so that the cause of the issue is being managed, rather than just the symptoms. It’s very important to speak with a medical professional, and then include the rest of your care team in the conversation so that others are helping with the process, too. Communication is a key component of a successful care experience.
Ultimately, chronic infections, chronic pain, or any other type of discomfort or disability can lead to a diminished quality of life, making the things that were once enjoyable and such a valued part of life no longer easy to do.
