New research indicates that an herbal supplement might help those that have suffered from a stroke to fight against some of the damage that is done to cognitive functioning during a stroke.
The study indicated that people who receive ginkgo diterpene lactone meglumine intravenously for 14 days after an ischemic stroke had significantly better cognitive outcomes at 14 days and 90 days after the onset of the stroke.
When a stroke occurs, oxygenated blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing the potential for impairment of cells within the brain. It can lead to issues with movement, speech, and cognition, to name a few things. Researchers are constantly looking for new ways to fight this.
The team conducted its research in conjunction with the American Heart Association. There’s still more research to do in this area and ginkgo biloba as a supplement is not supported by the FDA. However, there is hope that this line of research may be of benefit to those suffering from heart disease and the complications that can arise.
Ginkgo biloba has long been linked to cognitive function. It may modulate neurotransmitter activity by reducing inflammation and potentially inhibiting beta-amyloid plaque formation that is linked to Alzheimer’s. Some studies suggest benefits for memory and attention, but research outcomes vary. Individual responses vary, and more research is needed to clarify ginkgo biloba’s effectiveness in cognitive enhancement and its potential for helping with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Ginkgo biloba is an herbal supplement, and because of that, it doesn’t go through the same scrutiny that federally approved medication does. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work, but it does mean that there could be potential inconsistencies in the supplement from one manufacturer to another. It could very well be beneficial to you and your specific situation, but it is VERY important that you work closely with a medical professional before trying a new supplement or routine. Working with a doctor can help you to navigate an alternative treatment method and could even lead to a better outcome. It’s not a replacement for medication or medical attention, but it might be worth a consideration. Speak to your doctor before making any changes.
A stroke is not the only thing that impacts cognitive functioning as people age. Unfortunately, there are also things like dementia, Parkinson’s, and other issues that can impact people as they age. Having support for your family might be beneficial. While some families are equipped to handle early stages of cognitive issues in a loved one on their own, many families are not. As symptoms continue to progress, fewer and fewer people are able to take care of these things on their own. The help of a professional might be necessary.
