Recently, a team from the University of Houston published a study that has some big news for those that have suffered from a stroke. In their research article they claimed that we are really close to establishing stroke rehabilitation from home as a reality for a large number of people.
The team made this bold claim based upon a new development that they have been working on: a portable EEG headset that can be used at home by connecting to an exoskeletal device geared toward assisting with physical therapy and recovery.
Almost 800,000 people suffer from a stroke each year in the United States. A stroke can be fatal, but if someone receives treatment in a reasonable timeframe–typically within two hours of the start of the stroke–there’s a good chance that recovery can occur. However, the rehabilitation process can be long, slow, and painful. Many people that suffer from a stroke deal with permanent disability, unfortunately. Physical therapy can go a long way toward helping someone recover, however.
This new device is a low cost headset that helps bring physical and movement therapy to the home, rather than forcing someone in need to go to a rehab center for treatment. It’s just another way that medicine and treatment is expanding beyond the walls of the hospital. This is a big win for seniors, especially those that have trouble leaving their house and moving around.
The team published their findings in the professional journal, Sensors. Their findings have the potential to help many people take big steps in the recovery process after a stroke.
This technology has existed for quite some time, but it’s always been far too expensive for the average individual to take advantage of unless it was done in a therapeutic setting that had access to the technology already. This is a big step forward and could be just the next step in ensuring that stroke victims get the help that they need when it comes to recovery in the location that will be most helpful to them.
