New research indicates that statin use can help prevent future strokes in people that have had one or more stroke in the past and are at risk of future strokes.
This research was geared toward those individuals that have suffered an intracerebral hemorrhage. The research team found that people who regularly took statins had a much lower risk of a future stroke, including ischemic stroke–the most common type of stroke.
Statins are a commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular illnesses. While they are not commonly prescribed to treat or prevent stroke, this research indicates that that might change in the future.
Ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage strokes are two different events. Ischemic strokes are caused by a blockage of blood flow to the brain, while intracerebral hemorrhaging occurs when there is bleeding in the brain.
Over 15,000 people were studied during this project. While past research on this topic has had mixed results regarding the use of statins when it comes to stroke, this study concluded that statin use resulted in a 12 percent reduction in the likelihood of a future stroke during the three year period that this study incorporated.
This research comes from the American Academy of Neurology. They published their findings in the journal, Neurology. This research could be exactly what’s needed to help some stroke victims live a higher quality of life after their stroke and prevent a second event. There’s always more research needed, of course, but this is a big step forward and could serve as a good starting point for future projects hoping to help stroke patients.
It’s important to note that this study pertained only to individuals of Danish descent. It did not account for people from other ethnicities and may not hold true for all populations.
A stroke is a debilitating event. It can lead to lifelong disability if not treated quickly and effectively. Future strokes can be even more detrimental than a first stroke. Finding more ways to stem the damage that a stroke can do will only help people. Effective care is necessary for this to happen.
