Doctors are consistently moving forward in their understanding of strokes and how to treat them more effectively. One of the most recent examples of this is research into the immune system after someone suffers from a hemorrhagic stroke. Although this isn’t the type of stroke that occurs the most frequently, it accounts for about 13 percent of all strokes. By looking more deeply at the immune system’s response to this type of stroke, doctors hope to understand how to better treat this devastating event.
This particular type of stroke has a mortality rate of about 40 percent. It is marked by a burst blood vessel, which releases blood into the brain, resulting in damaged tissue. When someone suffers from a hemorrhagic stroke, permanent disability is very common. As of right now, there’s no known way to reverse the symptoms of this particular stroke. But, by looking at how the immune system responds, doctors understand what happens within the body a little bit better in the aftermath of a stroke. The hope is that this can be a building block for better treatment in the future. Already, doctors are experimenting with liquefying blood clots in hopes of reducing the likelihood of this stroke
Based out of MIT and Yale, the research team published their findings in Science Immunology.
A stroke can be a life changing event. Even a minor stroke can cause major issues, both for the person that suffers from it and their family members. It can cause temporary or permanent disability, issues with coordination, problems with communication, and more. The person that has a stroke may need a little bit of help for a short period of time, or they might require extensive help for the rest of their life. The sooner a stroke is treated, the less likely the impact is to be permanent, but there’s never any guarantee that this will be the case.
