Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a huge hot topic of late. Tools like ChatGPT are all over the news, with bold claims that they are going to change how we live on a day to day basis.
So far, there hasn’t been any huge changes that these tools have really brought about though. AI exists, but in a very primitive form compared to what movies and even the mainstream media is making it out to be. While comparisons to the Terminator franchise have been made by some, the AI that we now have is nothing like this. ChatGPT, for example, is basically a search engine that has been programmed to fit a language model. I can log onto the site, ask a question, but then ask the app to frame its answer in the form of a paragraph, or even a short essay, if I wish. I can ask it to walk me through how to create a website or build a chair, and ChatGPT searches the web for information, can boil that info down into a step by step concise answer, and give me a basic idea of what I’m looking for. And it does this very quickly.
But what does any of this have to do with senior care?
For one, accuracy of information is important. As I mentioned previously, AI acts much like a search engine at this stage. There’s a lot of stuff out on the internet, and not all of it is reliable. I could use ChatGPT to help me write this article if I wanted to, but the fact remains if I don’t comb through the end result and fact check any information that’s given, there’s a good chance that the data that ChatGPT uses to create the content could be pulled from a source that is less than reliable. When it comes to things like the health and safety of those that you love, this could be quite dangerous.
In short, the answer to the question posed in this blog post is, it’s too soon to tell. There’s a chance that AI might completely revolutionize the world, including how senior care is approached. But at this early stage in the game, it’s really too early to know what that might look like.
But AI resources are growing. There are currently over 100 million users of ChatGpt. The topic is not going to go away any time soon.
