All across the country, businesses are dealing with similar problems. It is hard to hire the right staff for whatever prospective jobs are available. There are continuously good reports on the news about jobs being filled, but the reality is, that a lot of these jobs don’t stay filled for long. People either quit or are let go because they are not a good fit for the position. It seems like there are more jobs open right now than there have been in quite some time.
The care business is no different.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that there are a lot of business place surveys that indicate that when staff feel supported, they are more likely to stay at their jobs–even when things are hard. Being a caregiver is hard; there’s no question about that. Professional caregivers should have access to training, support, and quality supervision. These might seem like small things, but they can help make a hard job a lot easier to persevere through.
There are already programs out there that have attempted to make training a lot easier for caregivers to access and work through on their own. So far, these are having positive results when it comes to staff satisfaction.
Ultimately, the solution to this issue is to attract more people in the profession of senior care. This sounds a lot easier than it really is, especially when you start looking at the financial side of things. No one wants to work for less pay than what they are worth. We all understand this on a fundamental level. We work hard, regardless of what our respective careers might be. Because of this, we deserve a competitive rate of pay based upon the kind of work that we do and what a liveable wage is in our geographic area.
Senior care is expensive to administer, however. Care can cost a lot to those receiving it, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a ton of money to pour into employees. Unfortunately, this is a high-cost line of work. While it’s true that some services could certainly pay staff more than they do (it’s like this in every single industry, of course), a lot of the really good service providers are already paying staff what they can.
More money for wages would certainly be helpful when it comes to attracting and retaining caregivers. But it’s not the only thing. Employee benefits, flexible schedules, and other things designed to help improve the quality of life that care professionals face. When caregivers are taken care of, it makes it so that the people they care for are taken better care of, too.
That’s why we do everything we can here at Paradise In-Home Care to care for staff. We start by hiring the very best caregivers that we can, then we provide them with the tools and training so that they have every bit of support at work that they can have. We pay competitive rates, too.
