Have you ever seen a commercial on television for a medication? There’s always an excessive amount of side effects listed toward the end of these commercials, usually in a quieter and faster tone than the rest of the commercial. While these side effects aren’t always common, they do happen. That’s why commercials are legally obligated to include these warnings in their ads. They happen, and for some people they can be pretty severe. You might have even experienced them yourself. We all know that side effects exist, and we all want to avoid them, but many medications are vital to maintaining health and avoiding side effects is a much lesser need.
At least one team of researchers is trying to help with this when it comes to treating blood pressure problems. By looking at data from the United States, Germany, and South Korea, this team established that two main types of medication are given when high blood pressure is first treated. These included angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) and angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARB). Although both have very similar outcomes when it comes to helping maintain a healthy blood pressure, the research team found that ARB medications tended to have fewer side effects on the individual taking the medications.
This research focused on the results of about three million people that took medication to help regulate blood pressure for the first time. Results were published by the American Heart Association in the journal, Hypertension.
The researchers stated that doctors are inundated with a number of different medications to prescribe, but that little research has been done when it comes to eliminating side effects. Instead, many doctors use trial and error to help establish what works best for the individual. Rather than doing this, it’s believed that a higher quality of treatment could be established earlier with this type of research. Hopefully, more medications are examined in this way.
