In many rural areas of the United States, it can be really tough to find high quality elder care. What we have observed is that planning ahead is the key when it comes to finding care. This goes for both large and small populations, but in rural America, this becomes far more important. There are often waiting lists at assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Even many in-home care services have to use waiting lists because of the limited available services and growing senior population. So your first step is to get your name on the lists that will be of most benefit to you before you think there’s an urgent need.
Luckily, here in the Bay Area, we are very blessed. There is not only a larger than average population of elderly individuals here, but there are many organizations devoted to providing the best care possible. Additionally, Paradise In-Home Care is a strong company because we have great people that work for us as caregivers. But as great as our community is, it is important to be aware that not everyone is in such a situation.
If you live in a rural area where care cannot be found easily, you do have options. There might not be as many options as there would be if you lived in a big city or a large suburban area, but there are still choices. First, look to family and friends. This is often what happens in cities, but because of the spread out nature of the country, this will need to be a more conscious effort. If you are in need of care, get in touch with your family close by and ask them for help. No one likes asking for help, but sometimes it is needed. Even a day or two a week might be more than enough at first.
Next, look at what services are provided near you. Depending on where you live, the services will vary, but all counties in the U.S. do have a Department of Social Services, or some variation of this. This organization is designed to help people in need, whether it be with food stamp benefits, public health assistance, or senior services. Speak to a county caseworker and see what they might be able to provide for you.
Look at professional services, too. Even in small towns, there are typically care services. They might not all be as big as you would find here in the Bay Area, but that doesn’t mean that these aren’t highly trained, compassionate professionals. A simple web search or a flip through your local yellow pages will give you a good idea of where to start.
Finally, ask others. You’re not the only one who is going through something like this. There are others who have needed care before you. Get in touch with friends and see what they’ve done as far as finding the best care that they can get. And if you can’t find others, remember that you or your family members might be called upon by others in the future for guidance.
