Declining mobility is one of the more common issues that seniors face. And while there are a lot of solutions out there to help with it, such as electric wheelchairs, Medi-Cal transportation services, and technology and apps that can help seniors live a higher quality of life and not worry as much about getting around.
But when it comes to food, sometimes there is a disconnect between seniors and access to essentials. Luckily, there are some solutions out there.
Meals on Wheels is one of the most prominent examples of a non-profit organization that focuses on ensuring that seniors around the country have access to food on a regular basis, but they are certainly not the only group that focuses on providing this service. There are also a lot of for-profit groups that also provide this service. And ever since the pandemic, things like grocery delivery services have exploded in popularity. The rise of things like Uber Eats, DoorDash, and other business models like this allow for even greater access to food quickly than ever before. These can all be great options for a senior who has difficulty getting out of the house like they once did.
What services like this don’t do is anticipate the needs of seniors who might be battling something like dementia or depression. For seniors in this situation, they might not ever feel like or know that they need to focus on their nutrition. This is a particularly troublesome aspect of senior care for professional services like ours. It is hard to serve people if they haven’t been identified as needing help. Seniors living in isolation without family or friends checking up on them regularly are particularly at risk in this regard.
To be sure, there is a lot more that can be done to help ensure that seniors have access to the food and other essential items that they need to survive.
We all have a role to play in the betterment of our communities. For us, that role is providing excellent care services for seniors in need.
Ultimately, everyone has different needs and goals when it comes to aging. Some people can really benefit from having a food delivery service on a regular basis, some only need it once in a while, and some don’t need it at all. Where your loved one is in this spectrum of needs will be different from other people, and it’s not uncommon for their needs to change over time.
This is one of the benefits of in-home care. It is flexible with changing needs, allowing your loved one to have their care adjust to them–and not the other way around. In-home care is typically given in a one on one setting, which allows for a good deal more flexibility and adjustment than the type of care received in a nursing home. Things like meal delivery services allow in-home care or even independent living to go on for a much longer period of time, enabling seniors to live the kinds of lives that they want, where they want to live them.
